Mobility vs. Stretching: Let’s Talk About It!

Understanding how to make your body feel and operate at its best is key for any Official.

If you lack mobility it can lead to extra or undue stress leading to injuries.

Example, if my ankles are stiff and immobile, all of the forces that are present during running or changing directions, will run up into my shin or knee.

This is where injuries such as shin splints or patella tendinitis can occur.

Before you start bending over to stretch out your hamstrings, understand that stretching and mobility are different.

Stretching is a short term fix that doesn’t solve long term problems.

When you stretch your muscles they lengthen but then...

Return back to their normal resting length within minutes.

With improvements in mobility we are trying to make long term changes that actually

open up joints and improve your movement quality.

As you look at your own mobility needs, there is a concept called the “Joint By Joint Approach”                    which should help you understand which joints to address from the bottom of the chain
